We are very excited to be hosting the first session of Learning from the Masters this Weds., April 22, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., when we will each spend sixty minutes studying and painting a small portion of Mary Cassatt’s “Lady with a Pearl Necklace.” The goal is not to copy an entire painting, but to improve observation skills by carefully noting color, light and techniques and transposing them to canvas or paper. This technique has been used for centuries as a way to improve technical fluency and engage deeply with an artwork.
After a short video about the process, artists will chose from a variety of photos of details in the painting. After an hour, we’ll talk about the process.
Any medium is fine. Please remember this is a study, not a finished work, and a small board (8x10 or 10x12), a notebook and your own paints, brushes, pencils or pastels are all you will need! Your iPad laptop would be helpful, too.
This members-only workshop is free, but we do need you to register so we have enough copies available!
