If you have ever had difficulty matching a color you see in a photograph or in nature or the skin tones for a portrait you are painting, this class is for you. This class is the culmination of decades of classes and study compressed into a comprehensive one-day workshop.

This class will cover:

• A thorough study of color and all its properties: hue, value and intensity (chroma/saturation)
• How to mix ANY color using six colors and white
• Additive and subtractive color (why digital color works differently than printed color)
• The reason photos do not accurately depict colors and how to overcome this inaccuracy
• Color harmony and ways to achieve it through limited palettes and the use of color schemes (monochromatic, analogous, complementary, triads and split complementary, etc.)
• The Richard Schmidt color charts and how to make your own set
• How you can create your own color wheel using your own personal choice of primary colors
• Clearing up the mystery of warm and cool colors and when to use each
• Understanding the relationship between value and color – tint shade and tone
• Transparent and opaque colors and when to use each (to avoid muddy colors)
• How to match colors of foliage, skies, mountains, rocks, etc.
• Dealing with a landscape that is comprised almost entirely of greens by understanding how to mix a huge variety of greens
• How to match Caucasian and ethnic skin tones for your portraits
• Turn challenging subjects into successful painting by understanding color
