About this event
November 14, 2025 from 9am-1pm - Session 3: "Filling in the Gaps" (Color Application)
If your study of art has been a self-directed education consisting of advice from fellow artists, random workshops and Youtube videos, it is likely that your artistic development has a lot of knowledge gaps. Along your journey, you may have missed some critical pieces of information that may mean the difference between a successful painting and painting that doesn't work. And the worst part about it is, you may not understand why it doesn't work. It may be too late for you to spend four years in art school studying under an organized and structured approach, but you can fill in the gaps left by years of self-study and experimentation. This class has been developed with the intention of filling in these gaps.
In the third session Instructor will discuss the final elements of the painting process: the detail work. Topics covered include:
- how much or little detail is needed and where and when to use it
- how to simplify complex subjects and how to avoid over-detailing elements such as mountains, trees, rocks, lakes and rivers and foregrounds by changing the hues without altering the value
- a review and thorough exploration of how to overcome the problems presented by using photos instead of plein air painting
- shadows and reflection
- study of focal points, edges, texture and contrasts of light and dark
- discussion about artistic styles and how to develop your own individual style.
- brush techniques (blending or tiling) and how they are used to create photo realistic representational art, impressionistic or abstract
- two distinctly different approaches to oil painting, alla prima and the classical layering style and how most of today's artist use a hybrid style with elements of both methods
